A Hidden Gem That Reminds You of London or Prague Stepping into this restaurant feels like one of those moments when you find yourself in London or Prague, wondering what's behind an unassuming door. Here's a taste of what you can expect. First, the charismatic owner sets the tone--witty but not overbearing, the perfect balance for a welcoming host. The liquor selection is impressive and thoughtfully curated. The wine list isn't just long for the sake of it--there's clear attention paid to pairing wines with the menu, creating a cohesive dining experience. As for the food? Elevated flavors with perfectly portioned servings. The halibut was tender and flavorful, and the veal was prepared to perfection. One standout for us was the phyllo mignon appetizer, which was so good it's now part of my "desert island" foods. The ambiance was perfect for a couple's night out--intimate and relaxed, ideal for a quiet anniversary dinner. What made it truly special was the absence of children, creating a serene, adult-centric atmosphere that's often hard to find. It's the kind of place you savor for special occasions, and we're already planning our next visit. For over 20 years, we've gone downtown for our celebrations, but now we've found our new favorite spot for the next 20. Five stars for a memorable night, with every aspect hitting just the right note.
Very good food and excellent service. A little on the pricey side, but we expected that, especially since we ordered from the specials and so had no idea of the cost. A little dark for my taste, and parking was on the street and not too easy to find. Definitely recommend!
The food was great, Crème Brulee was to die for. Customer service was above and beyond and entertaining. Ambiance was so cozy and romantic. Came here for our one year anniversary and will be back for another occasion. Ordered off the specials, Surf & turf and Salmon.
I absolutely LOVED our dinner here at Moxie. We ordered every appetizer on the menu including 2 that were not on the menu, but recommended by who I am assuming is the owner. Let's talk about service. I called to set reservations and they were very accommodating and kind. When I walked in, I was greeted warmly and seated right away. What I observed and loved was that the owner went to each table and was constantly making sure everyone in the establishment was happy/taken care of. He even gave us some chocolate desserts on the house. I can tell there is a love for food and creativity in the kitchen when it comes to this place. The lighting is romantic, candle lit. Food: portobello mushrooms were cooked perfectly and had good flavor, the Brussels sprouts Caesar was delicious--we couldn't stop talking about how simple, yet delicious it was because it wasn't the ordinary Caesar salad. The short ribs were too sweet for my taste buds, but they fell off the bone. The crab cakes were my absolute favorite. They were cooked perfectly and served with the best sauces to accompany the crab cake to make it feel like a different vibe with each bite. SO GOOD!! The grilled egg plant was delicious, like a caprese style. My second favorite of the evening was what I call the play on a shepards pie. It's like mini egg rolls with meat and veggies served ontop of mashed potatoes and gravy, it was Heavenly! For main entrees we got the ribeye steak (forgot a photo) which was cooked to perfection and the flavor profile was on point. Medium rare and came as just that--perfectly. The chicken Parmesan was delicious as well. I recommend visiting this restaurant if you haven't already. I will definitely be a frequent visitor here. For desserts we got the creme brûlée-- it was amazing. Some places lack flavor in the actual dessert, but it was so delicious! The chocolate cake was a dark chocolate and a bit too rich for me (however it was not dry cake). GREAT JOB MOXIE! You have made me happy and hopeful for the foodie scene here in Sacramento once again.
The short rib appetizer was amazing. They have so many different appetizer, meat and fish specials that are off menu. I got the Chilean sea bass and my friend got the halibut, both were off the charts. It is a smaller restaurant with a handful of tables so it is quiet and not too crowded. Best to call ahead of time. The service was spectacular. Definitely up there in one of my new favorite restaurants
We went for our anniversary dinner and it was amazing. The owner was a charmer and the service top tier. Our food was delicious, prompt and plates beautifully. It is a perfect date night restaurant. We will be making this a regular place for us.
We decided to try Moxie for our anniversary after reading reviews, it was a great decision. The service was impeccable with all of our courses perfectly timed and needs taken care of before we had to ask. I ordered the seared scallop and prawn special, and wow. The scallops were perfectly cooked. They were soft and buttery. The mashed potatoes were decadent. My husband ordered the lamb loin. Lamb isn't the first thing I would order, but honestly I didn't know which dish I liked better! The lamb loin was so tender, breaking apart in your mouth. We have definitely found a new date spot in Sacramento. Highly recommend!
I have been to Moxie's before. The wonderful service and the custom menu with more dishes than you can shake a stick at. One would think that as the restaurant matures it would become a better version of itself, but no. I had forgotten the long recitations of the specials that no one can actually remember. The food is still delicious, but the hautiness got old after a while. The owner dancing about the tables was charming before, but has gotten a bit old. The hand written illegible check was also a bit of an annoyance. Some ones dared asked for the price of a dish and was quickly rebuffed. The food is still good but as I have gotten older I have grown tired of the 1940's Rack Pack vibe of the place..
Everything I've read in prior reviews all ring true. I called and left a message and when the owner called me back for our reservation, I asked if they can accommodate gluten free since my wife is allergic to gluten. He said 90% of the menu can be made gluten free. Knowing what I know now, request ahead of time if you want a specific item to me made gf. Next time, we're going to request to have gf crab cakes since they could t be made gf when we were there. While he said they could accommodate for gf, not a lot could have been made gf on the spot. They did have a whole lot of gf options though so we were fine. The host was extremely friendly and really made us feel welcome. Having said that, he does run through the specials at an alarming rate, making you forget what he said almost instantly. The food: crab cakes were incredible. The short ribs were far and away the greatest thing I had here, maybe the greatest thing I've eaten in the last year. The caprese was delicious. My ribeye was delicious and cooked absolutely perfectly. It could have used a little more flavor, but it was very good. My wife's prawns and scallops were phenomenal. The food was outstanding. It was definitely dark but it made for a nice romantic evening. The music was nice too. We will definitely return and try to record the specials next time.
